Calamus
2oz. Ingredients: Acorus calamus, Water, Organic Cane Alcohol. Herb to Menstruum ratio 1:5
The use of calamus (Acorus calamus) in foods was prohibited in the United States by the FDA in 1968 due to concerns about the carcinogenic activity of purified beta-asarone from the Indian Jammu variety of Acorus calamus, when fed to mice in huge quantities. We use American Calamus Acorus calamus var. americanus, which doesn’t contain beta-asarone. Whether or not American Calamus can be used as an ingredient in a dietary supplement is not clear. Pending clarification on this issue, Eclectica Botanica’s Calamus containing products are not for human consumption, and should only be admired from afar, used for research purposes or slathered on topically.
