Ingredients: American Calamus, Acorus calamus var. americanus, Organic Sugar.

The use of calamus (Acorus calamus) in foods was prohibited in the United States by the FDA in 1968 due to concerns about the carcinogenic activity of purified beta-asarone from the Indian Jammu variety of Acorus calamus, that occured when fed to mice in huge quantities. We use American Calamus, Acorus calamus var. americanus, which doesn’t contain beta-asarone. Whether or not American Calamus can be used as an ingredient in a dietary supplement is not clear. Pending clarification on this issue, Eclectica Botanica’s Candied Calamus is not for human consumption, and is offered only as an example of a historical herbal preparation.
